Career in a Rut

Today is Monday, the start of another nothing-to-do-at-work week.

For the past couple of weeks, I've been literally shaking legs at work. Every morning I come to work, switch on the computer and surf the net till I knock off at 6.00pm.

This total lack of activity is driving me crazy!

I wonder why my boss decided to employ me in the first place. Does she need that many people in the department when almost all of us are lazing away?

I know I should be grateful that I have a job, especially in this economic climate where there's unemployment everywhere. But I can't help feeling redundant and stupid.

I feel that my skills and knowledge amassed through the years will deteriorate and wither away, leaving me incapable of performing up to expectations in my next role, wherever and whenever that may be.

I miss the adrenaline rush of planning and organising an event. I miss writing a press release and the satisfaction of seeing a high media value for a campaign I've worked on. I don't get to do all that in my current employment.

I think I seriously need to take a good, long, hard look at my career. To see where I'm heading in the next 5 years. And hopefully I'm able to salvage what's left of it.

Oohhh I know that feeling! It is the worst when you have nothing to do at work yet have to be there until you get off work. Tengok jam 100x pun still showing the same time! lol.

Sabar je lah Julie! Some time memang like that and esp now susah nak cari kerja, its better to not having anything to do but being paid then not being paid kan?

OMG Julie. Same here. In another 6 weeks, it'll be a year that I'm in this consultancy line.

I think, given our similar career backgrounds, we miss the actual hotel environment, where everything is go, go, go from the first step. And you are right, the end result is so satisfying. And I miss my fancy fresh-brewed coffee :)

I am still grateful though, for now. This must be part of some grand design :)

Salt N Turmeric,

Of course it's better to get gaji buta than not to be paid at all. But I can't help feeling that I could use the time wasted at the office to do other stuffs.

I bet my boss won't even notice if I sneak out to jalan-jalan at the mall!

Audrey,

Yes we should be grateful for what we have. Count our blessings!

The thing I miss most about the hotel line is the food, hahaha. Imagine getting to eat hotel food daily. No wonder I packed on the pounds!

Bosses should let their staff to leave the office when there's no work and if they need them, call ajelah lah kan?

Salt N' Turmeric,

That's true. I think in these difficult times, companies should practise flexi working hours, less work days, etc.

And if there's a need to come in, staff can always do so with prior notice.

Sekarang kita duduk kat office pun guna elektrik. Pergi tandas pun kena guna air, hehehe. All are costs to the company. Kalau ada kerja takpe. Ini buang masa je duduk kat office ...
